I collect all the chicken egg shells discarded from our breakfast, lunch and dinner and once a month I'll bung all the shells into the oven and set it to 200c for about 5 minutes to kill the bacteria. They can burn real quick so you need to watch them. Alternatively you can put them in the microwave and nuke it on high.
I then crush the shells finely with a spoon and mix it in with my shell grit to make the grit calcium enriched.
Crushing egg shells with a spoon is time consuming and tiring on the hands. One day, my wife gave me a giant stone mortar and pestle that she got from a bargain store for my birthday and now I crush the shells into fine powder in next to no time. One of the most practical and best presents I ever got from her!!!!.
