I mix in dried grass with my expensive store purchased swamp grass when supplying nesting material to finches.
It's easy to gather:
Get a large black plastic plant pot and place it under an awning , thats so the rain doesn't get to it (when it gets wet it starts turning into mulch) Let a section of you lawn over grow. When the grass is over 6 inches long (That's 15 cm for the younger generation ) , cut them off and throw it in the bucket. Just keep throwing the new cuttings on top of the old, they will dry out, you may want to turn them over occasionally.
You can stuff this el-cheapo material straight into the nest box as the outer lining and give your finches the quality swamp grass to weave into the inner lining .
