Kakarikis, come from New Zealand and are a cold climate bird, they DO NOT like the heat of the Australian summer. They'd feel at home in the Melbourne and Tassie weather! If you have an aviary 1.8 meters in height, you should place the nest boxes about halfway ( ie 90cm to 1 metre off the ground). Some breeders place the nest box on the ground when it gets too hot, however I don't find the need to do this as in mid summer as I leave the lid slightly ajar so that the heat can escape.
You need to place at least 2 nesting boxes in the cage as the hen will start on a second batch of eggs before the first lot of young have left the nest, the cock takes over looking after them as the hen starts on the send nest.
They breed all year around and tend to have large families (the most I had is 8 young but there have been reports of 12) , five being the norm, so the bigger the nest box the better. My Kakas nest in boxes ranging from Cockatiel size all the way up to 30 cm x 30 cm x 40cm tall.
Just cover the bottom of the nest box with about 2cm of peat moss and change it completely when the chicks are 4 weeks old.
