HI All, Being new to breeding birds I am still trying to find somewhere fairly local and still well priced in St George (Hurstville) area to buy my bird needs. Have tried the place in Beverly Hills but doesn't have much and is a bit pricey. Any other good places in the area? Thanks
Oh and does anyone know where you buy canary rings for babies from?

Hi Ollie,
I live in Beverly Hills, and have been buying birds for quite a number of years.
There isn't any cheap places to buy birds anymore, Kevin at Better Birds at Revesby was pretty good but he retired this year and closed the shop. Jamie at Braeside Produce out near Wentworthville was also quite cheap but after his death, new owners have taken over the business and prices are at "Petshop Prices".
I buy my birds either from the internet ie scanning the pages of Petlink.com.au, looking at adverts on our Buy Sell Forum, scanning the pages of Cracker.com.au etc etc etc.. Only problem is the sellors are all over Australia and I'd never advise sending money to any one on the promise of them sending you the birds unless someone can vouch for the seller.
or alternatively wait till the bird sales startup beginning of next year. Closest are in Castle Hill and Fairfield. There was one in Revesby but they don't run it any more due to poor attendance.
If you need to buy at a bird shop try Andrews Bird & Pet Palace Smithfield NSW, 65d Brenan St Smithfield NSW .They are quite reasonable.
However , you won't get better prices or wider choice than at a bird sale, it is almost worth holding out , however since we are in the breeding season already, you may not have much choice....Try the birdshop at Smithfield.
I know the shop that you are referring to, it's halfway between Beverly Hills and Kingsgrove, their prices are typically Pet store prices, not really their fault as they need to pay the rent.
Rings can be purchased at
Newcraft Trading Tel 9533 3785
They are in an industrial complex on Hearn st, Peakhurst
Just give them a call as they owner is not always there, if you are buying a small lot , make sure you bring cash.
Alternatively, you may want to contact one of the canary clubs, as a service to their members I'd say they supply club rings. I used to breed canaries as a kid and I can remember that canary rings are all colour coded , ie there is a particular colour for a particular year and the last 2 digits of the year number is stamped onto the ring.
Joining a local bird club will expose you to hundreds of bird fanciers, I beleive the Avicultural Society meets in Belmore somewhere. You'll be able to buy and swap birds with members.
Hope this helps!
cheers
Ed
By the way, You woudn't be a Norwich Canary Breeder would you? I'd love to start on canaries one day but not until I can obtain Norwich...I just like the looks of them!
